HMR Certification

The HMR Certification effectively trains clinical professionals in all aspects of GRE’s A Man’s Way model including the Helping Men Recover Curriculum.  This internationally recognized curriculum, based upon Dan Griffin’s master’s research and Dr. Stephanie Covington’s Helping Women Recover, was designed to ensure effective treatment of men, especially those with a trauma history.
Approximately 70% of people in addiction treatment programs are men and of these men over 60% report at least one traumatic experience in their life time. Traditional trauma informed addiction treatment models were originally designed for use with women and simply changing the pronouns does not respond to the unique experience and challenges of treating men’s trauma. Furthermore, men and women experience, respond to, exhibit the symptoms of and recover from trauma differently. Therefore, the interventions and treatment services we provide to men must also be different. Client-centered treatment cannot mean avoiding the systemic impact of gender on our clients – male and female identified.  Many treatment professionals may be unintentionally re-traumatizing male participants thereby increasing their risk of failure in the program.
  • How many addiction professionals are being trained to effectively work with men and trauma?
  • By making the commitment to the HMR Certification program, clinical professionals that finish the process are ensuring a change in the future of how men are treated.

Through this multi-level program, professionals can choose to enter the certification process at the level that fits their clinical practice.  There is a level for those only wishing to facilitate the curriculum and those that choose to take it a step further.  HMR Certified Consultants, the highest level of certification, train and offer consultation to other clinical professionals.  No matter the level an individual enters, the HMR Certification Program offers the clinical expertise to help men recover and change the way we think about treating men and trauma.
